Illustrator 5 - Character Design

The final task of Illustrator this semester is to create your own character. The guidelines are that the design must be original, and not human. Human-like creatures are fine, like zombies or monster knights. Humanoid beings are generally accepted as well, though I decided to go a completely different route.

Since my childhood revolved around much more cartoonier games and art styles, my monster is a goofier idea than most, that being a crab that's also an onion/garlic. It's not exactly the monstrous, ravenous type of creature, but more of an animalistic onion/garlic that has clear weaknesses and vulnerabilities, while still remaining threatening enough to normal people.




The design is very much video game inspired, with common video game monster tropes. The eyes are bright yellow, but resemble stones more than eyes, which hints at their false nature. They really are just stone like objects made from apetite, a shiny reflective gem stone. Attacking these will not hurt the creature, though it will produce a hard, 'thud' sound, showing the ineffectiveness of the attack.

The true eyes of the monster are on the stalk looking appendages protruding from its head. These also glow, though they could appear much more like an anglerfish's light tip, and serve a dual purpose as a lure and its eyes. They're discreet enough to not instantly be an obvious weakness, but they also stick out from the creature's more subdued and dull colours.



The Crabonion's (Yes, that's its name) main weapon is its massive claw, which is lifted straight from the fiddler crab. The claw is incredibly heavy, which slightly slows down the Crabonion's movements and attacks. The claw can be used to pinch people and other animals/creatures in half with ease, though the Crabonion usually just uses it to crush foes under the claw's immense weight.

The weakness of the claw is also noticeable, though not instantly apparent. The Crabonion is well armoured, but there is a small uncovered space between the claw and the arm. This is the ligamen of the creature, and it sticks out thanks to its size, clashing green and yellow colour against the purple and white, and cells. The Crabonion's crushing attack is deadly, but the heft of the claw means it takes a while to recover. This allows you to attack the flesh, sooner or later hurting it enough to make it run or just straight up severing the Crabonion's weapon.

Once this has happened, the Crabonion will begin to panic. The creature will then either try to escape to allow its claw to regrow or desperately fight to save itself. If it runs, it will burrow and bury itself in the ground to absorb nutrients that will allow it to regenerate its claw faster. The claw regenerates slightly differently each time, sometimes giving it extra length, more weight or smaller pincers.

If the Crabonion is cornered, can't run away or is forced to fight, it will pull some smarter moves than before. Although its main weapon is gone, it can still fight back by running at its foe at full speed in an attempt to squash them. It can use its sharp feet to spear enemies by stepping on them. It will attempt to swallow any living thing it finds to absorb nutrients and heal faster.

In desperate attempts, the Crabonion may try to spit its acids at its pursuer. This leads into out next design point, the Crabonion's diet and why it's a menace to humanity. The creature has no other purpose other than to grow, and it can achieve this via a few methods. The fastest however is for it to swallow other living creatures. The Crabonion has no stomach, but instead a hollow space filled with acids. These melt down any unfortunate victims into a nutrient soup, which the Crabonion then absorbs.

The best way to kill the Crabonion at this point would be to cripple its legs to make it less active. Once this is done, a few good strikes to it should hurt it enough to not be able to fight back. To kill it however, you must yank its brain by pulling on the eye-stalks on its head. This effectively kills the creature.
